Holiday Card with Rowena

October 17, 2017 / CATEGORIES - Other

Hi crafty friends! As Christmas is fast approaching, I’m gearing up on making holiday cards. Unlike last year I did everything at the last minute and almost didn’t get any done. So, this year I’m making sure not to be rush and feel the stress of the holidays. So let’s get crafting!

Today I’m showcasing the cute ‘Winter Kobi’ stamp and die set. I just love all the little accessories that comes with the set. It’s perfect for creating your scene.

For my card I created a simple wintery scene. For my panel I used Neenah Desert Storm and die cut my panel using ‘Scallop Frame’ creative dies. Then I created my own sloped hill by drawing it on a paper and used scissors to cut it. You can also use any sloped hill die you have on hand.

I used a white pigment ink with a sponge dubber to create the snowy hill. For the sky I used salty ocean distress oxide using a sponge dubber as well.

Once my wintery scene was done. I colored all my images with copics. I adhered all my images with foam tape and added twine for the sleigh. To finish the card I used one of the sentiment from ‘Friends of Winter’ stamp set.

That finishes the card for today! Hope I inspired you all to get a head start on your Christmas cards and what better way than with this cute stamp.

Happy crafting,
Rowena

Wish You Were Here with Erica

August 17, 2017 / CATEGORIES - Cards, CAS, Other

Hello everyone!

It’s my turn back on the blog and I have a super simple but sweet card for you today.

In less than two weeks I will be moving, and not just to a new house but a new country, leaving lots of wonderful friends behind for a new adventure.

Being a “soppy poppy” (British expression for being soft-hearted and emotional) I am already missing everyone and want lots of hugs. With that in mind I made a card using Kobi the Birthday Bear because he looks so squeezable and cuddly. You might notice that this is my first ever card using this absolutely adorable bear and I haven’t got a single clue as to why I haven’t used him sooner, he’s so adorable I don’t know what to do with myself! Well, apart from stamping him up and colouring him in of course.

Using MFT hybrid ink in Black Licorice, I stamped him up on Strathmore Bristol Vellum water colour card stock but I didn’t heat emboss it for a change. Surprised?? I bet you are, lol! What won’t be so surprising is that I used my Zig markers for the colouring again. My aim was a soft, warm grey look, like a vintage teddy bear sort of. Once he was suitably coloured and dry, I used the Coordinating Die Set to cut him out.

***If you don’t have the stamp set but want both the stamp AND the die, there is a BUNDLE you can get. Let’s face it, it does save a huge amount of time to have the die instead of having to fussy cut each and every image. I’m not the most patient of people so these are a life-saver for me! ***

I wanted to keep this card very simple so I grabbed one of my new Distress Oxide inks, Picked Raspberry, and went to town with ink blending on a card base. I love the look of lifted ink so I splattered some water on it too and lifted that with a paper towel. Setting it aside to let it dry properly, I got the And The Fox Says stamp set out as I wanted to use the sentiment ‘Wish you were here’. This I stamped on a small white banner in black ink. I almost used pink again but thought it would be simply too soppy!

Putting the card together was simple enough. Until I started over-thinking it and decided that it was TOO simple. *insert shocked gasp here* Oh yes, I, Erica ‘Queen of Over-The-Top’ thought it needed something else. Can you keep up with the twists and turns??? It’s like a card making thriller, isn’t it?!

Anyway, time to tame the drama queen and get on with it! To keep with the pink theme of the card, I decided to add a single pink flower and make it look like Kobi offers it to the recipient. Before I managed to come up with any more radical ideas I got the Together We Bloom stamp set out and stamped up one of the blooms. I quickly coloured it with the Zigs again and fussy cut it out because I don’t have the coordinating die yet.

To put the whole thing together I cut a small slit in between Kobi’s paws and inserted the stem of the flower there and secured it on the back with foam tape. I did this both to stop if from sliding apart as well as adding some height to them when I adhered them to the card. At this point it was time to assemble the card and it took less than two minutes. I also added a few Sparkling Crystals to the card to add a subtle, but lovely, finishing touch.

So, all in all, for a simple card, I sure can make things rather complicated, can’t I? Oh Lordy, my card making process is anything but dull, I will give you that.

Well, that’s it from me for today. Happy crafting and see you soon again!

Lots of love from Erica

Back To School | Theme Week – Day 5 with Liliuska

August 11, 2017 / CATEGORIES - Other

Hello Everyone!

We continue our Back to School Theme Week and even have a special SALE for you today as well. Make sure to read to the end to not miss a special discount code. It’s Liliuska’s turn to bring you some more school inspiration.

Since male cards are the tricky ones usually, I decided to make couple cards for male teachers. I hope you will find these helpful and fun to recreate. 😉
I picked blue and black cardstock for my cards, as I like to create pair. This way I can always play around my idea and have two slightly different cards while I already have all the stamps out anyway. I made two card bases and die cut two panels out both sheets of cardstock.

I started with blue panel. I grabbed a dark shade of blue ink and stamped one row with pencil stamp. I stamped the same row on masking paper to make a mask and covered the bottom row. Next I stamped two more rows, stamping one pencil higher than the rest to make it stand out. For that pencil I stamped eyes, glasses and moustache. I also decided to colour it with pencils to make it pop even more. I stamped the sentiment in black ink and embossed it with clear embossing with some glitter, just for fun. I also masked the very edge of the panel and added white shades with white ink. For this I like to use my fingers instead of sponges. I use daubers and sponges for all colours of ink except for white. I guess I feel I can control the process a little better.

Now is the turn to work on my card base. Since I picked black base for this it had to remind blackboard. I grabbed two small images and stamped them alternatively, making a pattern. Once stamped images were dry I shaded all the edges with white ink. I adhered blue panel to the base using foam tape to add some dimension.

For the second card I picked black panel and played around the blackboard theme as well. This time I also stamped pencil image multiple times, only now I decided to stamp top part of the panel. To make one of the pencils stand out I heat embossed with white embossing powder, and did the same with the sentiment and a little cup holder. All other pencils were simply stamped with white ink. I also added some shading on the panel edges using white ink and added a bit of detail to the embossed pencil with white pencil. This panel I adhered to the blue base using double-sided tape. 🙂

Colourful Happy Birthday with Laurie

July 24, 2017 / CATEGORIES - Other

Hello everyone and welcome back! Laurie here to share a super fun birthday card! One of my favourite things to do is die cut!! There is something so satisfying when you remove that piece of cardstock from the die. Another one of my favourite things is colouring. I recently invested in some Copic markers and am loving them!! So, let’s check out my project!!

I started by cutting the rectangle die from the Dotted Patterns Set 1 out of some white cardstock. I knew I wanted some sort of banner on this card so I took the small scalloped edged die and ran this through also with white cardstock.

This particular die is very cool. It can be used to create pretty slits in your projects to insert gift cards, etc. In this case, I trimmed it to become a banner shape. I layered this piece onto black cardstock and trimmed around it to give some contrast…you will see this in the finished card 🙂

Next, I stamped the presents and party hats from the super cute Kobi the Birthday Bear stamp set and chose some Copic markers.

The presents to the right was a total human error! Please ignore.

I love the shapes and designs on these images! Whimsical and so much fun to colour! I die cut everything out with the Co-ordinating Dies.

Before I put my card together, I decided the white panel was a little too stark, so I squished some Black Soot Distress Ink onto an acrylic block, added water and using a brush, created some splatters.

I started by adhering my banner directly onto the card panel. For the sentiment, I white heat embossed “Happy Birthday” onto a strip of black cardstock (the sentiment is also from Kobi). I snipped one end to make a fishtail banner. I adhered this on top of the banner.

I placed some black and white ribbon around the top of the banner and sentiment and adhered the panel on to a white cardbase using fun foam. I adhered the hats and presents in a fairly random order using a combination of tape runner and foam adhesive.

For a bit of added sparkle I used various sizes of sequins from the Crystal Clear Fusion…love these things!!

I hope you enjoyed todays project and got inspired to do some colouring and die-cutting!! Thank you SO much for stopping by!!

Have a great week!!!

Laurie

Bright Birthday with Erica

July 20, 2017 / CATEGORIES - Birthday Cards, Cards, Floral Cards, Other

Hi everyone! Erica here, it’s my turn back on the blog today. I have so many birthdays that have just passed and even more coming up so I have to replenish my birthday card stash. What a hardship, eh? Perfect excuse to get some pretty flower stamp out in my mind!

I thought it would be nice to mix’n’match the flowers from the Thank You So Much and Together We Bloom as well as the leaves, to create a nice floral border to frame the Happy birthday sentiment I was planning on using.

To start with I got some water colour card stock and cut out an A2 sized panel using the die in the Darling Ribbon & Dotted Frames creative dies set. This is one of my go-to dies, not just from Studio Katia but generally when I craft, I use it all the time and it became one of my staples very quickly.

I almost always heat emboss my images when I am planning on doing water colouring and todays card was no different, it just had to be planned a bit and masked a bit and done in stages… Before stamping the images with black ink, to create a black outline under clear embossing powder, I used my anti-static tool all over the panel. Then I popped it in my MISTI and put the stamps where I wanted them. The MISTI really comes in handy here as I first had to stamp with black ink and then with VersaMark to make sure I got the images nice and juice to pick up the embossing powder. Once the first lot was set with the heat tool, I used the anti-static tool all over the panel again. The heat and the ‘wind’ from the heat tool removes any of the powder and it’s very important to reapply before attempting to add more embossing powder as it will stick to everything.

The masks I had from previous projects came in handy here and I placed them over my already stamped images and then built up my flower border by filling in the empty spaces with the stamps.

***A top tip*** is to use a piece of clear acetate between your panel and the stamps as they might have residual ink on them and it only takes a tiny amount to cause a smudge!

I repeated the process with the anti-static tool, black ink, VersaMark ink and clear embossing powder until I was happy with the floral border. Then I did exactly the same with the sentiment ‘happy birthday’ which I mixed’n’matched from the Happy stamp set. This is another must-have set, it covers everything from ‘happy holidays’ to ‘happy anniversary’ to ‘happy, just because’. So handy and versatile!

Once all my flowers and my sentiment was stamped and heat embossed, I got my Zig markers out and sat down to colour. My colouring time is my me-time, I just adore it and quite often sit down to colour rather than watch TV for instance. I find it so relaxing and love seeing the stamped images come to life. Colouring flowers I especially adore and for this one I actually only used the Dark Pink Zig marker for all the flowers, to create highlights and lowlights I added either more water or more colour and that was it. It is a time-consuming work but so rewarding. The leaves were, perhaps unsurprisingly, coloured green and I also added some Warm Grey in between the stems at the bottom and very lightly around the top of the flowers. I do this often to soften the look a bit and to tone down the white space a little.

There is a fine line between colouring it just right and going to far, I especially find this applies when I have stared at the same image for some time. This is one of the reasons I like using soft colours to do the shading and I have to force myself to take breaks, walk away a little and look at it with fresh eyes once I come back to it. Quite often you will find that the colouring looks quite different once it is all dry too. Building up layers is a great skill to have when it comes to water colouring but it can be hard to stick to. Quite often I just want to keep colouring until it is completely finished. I’m not always the most patient of people, it’s one of my flaws…

Whilst letting the panel dry, I cut a piece of card stock and made a card base. I also selected a few satin finish black sequins from the Jet Black fusion pack, I adhered these to the panel with glossy accents once the panel was bone dry. A quick adhesive job later the whole thing was added to the card base and that was that! Whilst this wasn’t exactly a quick card, I really enjoyed making it and hopefully the recipient will enjoy it too!

That’s it from me today!

Happy crafting from Erica

Christmas in July theme week-Day 5 with Erica

July 14, 2017 / CATEGORIES - Cards, CAS, Other, Theme Week, Winter Holidays

HO HO HO!! Merry July-mas or Christmas in July as we are celebrating this week here at Studio Katia!

Erica on the blog today with my take on this fun theme. I made a very simple card BUT I didn’t use any of the Christmas stamp sets available, oh no, not me. That would be too easy. I have a habit of not taking the easy route. Just ask my husband, lol!

Anyway, I looked through my stash to see what spoke to me and I saw a vintage bauble in one of the stamps from the Brush Strokes, can you see it?

I got my MINI MISTI out and placed an A2 sized piece of water colour card stock, which had been dusted with my anti-static tool, in it before placing the stamp in the first position and stamped it up. I wanted a vintage look so I used Gold Tinsel embossing powder from RangerInk. Re-positioning the stamp I stamped a second bauble and heat embossed that too. The third bauble I placed slightly behind one of the others, which I had covered with a mask.

For the sentiments I used single word stamps from Pink Winter and Sweet Heart Candy to write ‘Merry Christmas, Hugs & Kisses’ on the baubles. These I also heat embossed but with a Wow Embossing Powder called Gold Pearl.

Once all three were heat embossed, I got my Gansai Tambi 36-pack water colours out and loosely coloured the baubles in. I tried going for soft vintage colours to not cover up the sentiments completely. In hindsight, I should have used a brighter colour or gone for black for them but oh well, you live and learn.

A final touch was adding a bit of green around the baubles to mimic a Christmas tree and ribbons from which the baubles are hanging. Ta-da!! All done and pretty quick too!

That’s it from me today but I hope I have inspired you to join in with our Christmas in July theme and get ahead with those Christmas cards. Let’s be honest, it is never too early to get started on these as we always need more than we think, right?
