Hello Craft enthusiasts! Jyoti here again from CardsNCraftsNYC. In the world of card-making, there’s always room for experimentation and discovering new ways to utilize our crafting supplies. Today, I am excited to delve into a unique technique that involves dry embossing on vellum using a hot foil plate. By combining the allure of foiling with the delicate translucency of vellum, we can create breathtaking focal points for our cards. Join us on this creative journey as we explore this technique step by step and craft a gorgeous floral-themed card that is sure to impress.
Gathering the Supplies:
Before we embark on our creative adventure, let’s gather the necessary supplies. You’ll need the following items:
Studio Katia Peony Trimmings Clear Stamps for sentiment
Spellbinders Silver Holographic Speckle Foil
Spellbinders Hot Foil System
Black cardstock panel
Vellum
Distress Oxide Inks (Carved Pumpkin, Picked Raspberry, Candied Apple, Mowed Lawn)
VersaMark embossing ink
White embossing powder
Waffle Flower A2 Layers Die Set
Foam tape
Embellishments such as sequins and crystals
A2 card-base
Foil Plate Background:
To begin, take a black card-stock panel measuring 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches. Utilizing the Roses foil plate and Silver Holographic Speckle Foil, apply foil to the top right and bottom left corners of the panel. Once finished, cut the panel using the second-largest die from the Waffle Flower A2 Layers Die Set. This will create a beautifully foiled background for our card design.

Embossing on Vellum:
Now, let’s move on to the captivating focal point of our card and the new technique. Cut a piece of vellum using the Spring Roses Die. Align the die-cut vellum with the hot foil plate and carefully run it through your die-cutting machine using your embossing sandwich, ensuring it is securely taped down to prevent any shifting. Embossing on vellum can be delicate, so experiment with pressure to achieve the desired effect. If cracks appear during embossing, embrace them as they add character to the final embossed image.

Adding Subtle Colors:
To enhance the embossed vellum flower, we’ll add subtle colors from behind. Grab your Distress Oxide Inks in Carved Pumpkin, Picked Raspberry, Candied Apple, and Mowed Lawn. Using a small blending brush, apply the inks more heavily in the center of the flowers, gently fading the colors towards the edges. This technique will create a soft and ethereal look, allowing the embossed design to shine through.
Creating the Sentiment:
Every card needs a heartfelt message. Stamp the sentiment “Congratulations” from the Peony Trimmings Stamp Set onto a piece of black cardstock using VersaMark embossing ink. Sprinkle white embossing powder over the stamped image, then heat-set it with a heat tool. Use one of the banner dies from the Peony Trimmings Die Set to cut out the sentiment, creating an elegant banner-shaped element for your card.

Assembling the Card:
Now that all the elements are prepared, it’s time to assemble the card. Adhere the black foiled panel onto a top-folding A2 card base. Place the vellum piece with the embossed floral design in the center of the card using foam tape. Be mindful to position the foam tape behind the sentiment to ensure it doesn’t show from the front, maintaining a clean and polished look. This arrangement creates a pleasing diagonal flow for the floral design.
Embellishing the Final Touches:
To add an extra touch of charm and sparkle, let’s embellish our card. Adorn it with Studio Katia 3M Crystal Clear Sequins and some Onyx Crystals. These embellishments will elevate the overall appeal of the card and add a finishing touch.

Congratulations on exploring a new technique in the world of card-making! By embossing on vellum using a foil plate, you’ve created a stunning card with captivating textures and delicate beauty.
